Leopoldstadt

Leopoldstadt is one of the districts of the Austrian capital. It got its official name from the Holy Roman Emperor, but it has always been popularly known as the "Matza Island", because a huge Jewish community has lived here since time immemorial.

Hermann Merz's family also comes from Leopoldstadt. But if his great-grandfather was just a fabric peddler, then Hermann Merz himself is a successful manufacturer, one of the richest people in Vienna, a regular at the opera and social salons accepted by high society.
